We had a great meet up this past Sunday’s sword workshop. Coaches John and Sam taught basic deflection-cuts and combos with jian and dao. Drills and games, moving from more cooperative to less cooperative.1. Begin with a basic one hand push hand pattern to set up a rhythm. The attacker finds an opportunity to set up an opening then apply a technique. The receiver is passive. Two rounds, then switch roles. 2. Yin style overturning. One person gives resistance while the other person turns the arm over the wrist to reset the position. As fatigue sets in, play with vectors, leverage, timing, and weight distribution.2. Clothes pin tag variation. One attacker, one defender. The attacker uses one hand to capture the clothes pin on the defender’s shoulder. The defender uses one hand to defend with twisting, sticking, circling techniques. Constraints: 30 seconds. Stay in the sumo circle. No kicking, hitting, throwing, locking.Can a constraints led approach be used for traditional martial arts where fidelity to shape and aesthetics are so important? Presumably they can if the kata/taolu are meant to show utility. So often in paired practice we agree that one person should attack in one way and the other person will defend accordingly. Can techniques become affordances when the partner is less compliant? On Sunday, September 13th, Sifus Sam and John will be hosting a free Chinese sword workshop at our weekly practice group. We’ll be learning fundamental cuts, deflections and combinations in paired exercises. If you practice a kung fu or tai chi sword form and want to learn why certain movements appear, this is for you. Or if you practice a different style this is a great opportunity to expand your horizons. Blunt practice weapons will be provided.This is an open community event for all people and skill levels!
